Notes on Revising

"There is no good writing; there is only good rewriting." -- Flaubert

Revise your paper with the following guidelines in mind:

Some general directions:
Go back over the assignment to see if your essay truly addresses the issues.  Try outlining your essay as it stands to check for weak organization.

Some specific directions:

        Subtract, Refine:

  • Clarify thesis statement--or the point or goal of your essay
  • Sharpen diction; cut repetitious or wordy sections
  • Eliminate instances of mere summary; rewrite the summary so that it proves a point you are making
  • Check organization of paragraphs
  • Check transitions between sentences, paragraphs and ideas
       Add:
  • Strengthen the 3? 4? more? points of your analysis; eliminate overlap
  • Add specific example(s) or find better one(s)
  • If you don't have one, think of a thought-provoking     introduction
  • Sharpen the idea, assessment, underlying principle in your conclusion
        Revise Again:
  • Make sure that transitions effectively incorporate new material
  • Check to see that your introduction prepares for your            conclusion, and that the middle of the essay will help your reader get there
  • Read the essay aloud to check for clarity of expression
  • Make sure you have a variety of sentence and paragraph      lengths
  • See that the final product is not a cut-and-paste job, but is a    unified and coherent essay.
Every change you make should help sharpen your own ideas and help your audience read with greater interest and understanding.
