This model uses a form that reviewers fill out during a workshop and return to the writers. Students can be put in groups of three, so each reviewers writes and receives two reviews. This can be done in a 50 minute class.
Your Name:
Name of Author:
1. Locate the thesis of the paper and evaluate it. Is it specific enough? Does the paper prove it? How might the author sharpen the focus of their argument? How would you rate the thesis in terms of invention?
2. Circle the major claim of each paragraph. Is there only one claim per paragraph? Is that claim supported sufficiently with examples from the text? Locate the data/warrant for each claim. Does the data prove the claim? Does the warrant explain how the data proves the claim? [Do the work on the paper itself; list specific problems below.]
3. Think about the paper as a whole. Is there other data (specific evidence or quotes) that the author might use to help prove claims? Is the paper organized logically so that each idea flows into the next? Are there clear transitions and connections between the parts of the paper?
4. What works well in the paper? What needs improving?
5. What is the ONE thing that you would have the author work on in revision?
