Financial Information

Read this section carefully, and discuss it with your parents or guardians. You should establish a plan for emergency money to cover unexpected medical expenses, theft, etc. As stated earlier, tuition and Program Fees for the Vanderbilt in France program will be sent to your parents from the Office of Student Accounts.
Students are responsible for the purchase of any meals not included in the Dinner Plan, as well as books and supplies, travel to and from Aix, and, of course, all personal expenses, including those incurred during travel on weekends and during vacation periods.
Students who come to study in Aix with the Vanderbilt in France program are often struck by the price of food and other expenses associated with the daily cost of living. Prices do seem to be higher, particularly for food and beverages.
For many students, this is the first time that they are really on their own and responsible for making sure that the money they bring with them will be sufficient to cover such essentials as books, notebooks, lunch, and even Kleenex. Please think this over and come to Aix prepared to manage your own money in a way that will allow you to live comfortably (without being overly preoccupied with the cost of things) and to travel and enjoy your stay in France and in Europe.
Former participants in the semester program recommend having between $3,000 and $5,000 if you plan on taking advantage of travel opportunities (weekends in particular). Staying in youth hostels and limiting meals can cut costs a great deal, but living and traveling in Europe has become very expensive. Meals, in particular, can be very expensive compared with prices in the U.S.
