Programs in Italy

Chancellor Gee with the Summer 2003 Siena & Florence students.

CET Italy Programs

Florence, Italy                                              (academic year, semester, summer)
Siena, Italy                                                   (academic year, semester, summer)

Programs
The CET programs in Italy offer an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Italian culture and Italian language and deepen their understanding of Italian society through the study of art history, economics, political science, and literature. Students will go to either Florence or Siena, where they will be immersed in the culture and art of Italy. A unique feature of these programs is their study trips, made possible by each program's small size and specialized curriculum. The semester Traveling Seminars include two week-long study trips which focus on art from the Classical to Baroque periods. The first travels to Rome, Naples, and Pompeii, following the chronological development of art from the Classical through Medieval and Renaissance to Baroque. The second study trip of the Florence program travels to Milan, Parma, and Pavia to explore the period of the High Renaissance, while the second trip of the Siena program travels to Venice, Padua, Vicenza, and Verona to explore La Serenissima (The Republic of Venice and the Veneto). Each trip will be led by a faculty member and will meet with specialized lecturers.

During the summer, the CET Traveling Seminars will take the students to Sicily, the crossroads of several ancient cultures. Included will be visits to the island's massive Romanesque cathedrals and Greek temples, its Baroque palaces and churches, and the famous Mount Etna. With lectures focusing on Sicily's artistic heritage, this trip will broaden the students' understanding of Italian art and Sicilian culture.

Living Arrangements
In Florence, students have the option to live with another Vanderbilt student and Italian roommates in apartments, or to live with another Vanderbilt student in a homestay with an Italian family. In Siena, fall and spring semester students live in apartments with another North American student and Italian roommates; summer students may choose apartment or homestay living. In both programs, participants may have the opportunity to room only with Italians in either a homestay or student apartment situation. Student apartments have kitchens students can use to cook meals. Five lunches per week are included in the cost of the programs, regardless of the type of housing arrangements the participants choose.
