Examination Policies — Physics 117B
There will be two in-class exams (75 minutes each) during the semester. Each will be a closed-book examination, conducted under the Vanderbilt Honor Code. Each of these examinations will count 25% of your final grade. The final examination will comprise 35% of the final grade, with homework making up the balance. Class participation as measured through the Personal Response System ("clicker" exercises) and class discussion will be used as needed where the final numerical grade falls on the borderline between two letter grades.

Physics 117B FINAL EXAMINATION
The Final Examination for Physics 117B will be offered at three different times, at the locations listed below. You may choose to take the examination at any one of the times, as the format of the examination will be the same in each instance.

Thursday, April 28, 9:00-11:00 a.m. — 4327 and 5211 Stevenson
Friday, April 29, 9:00-11:00 a.m. — 4327 and 5211 Stevenson
Thursday, May 5, 9:00-11:00 a.m. — 5211 Stevenson

The test will include material from Chapters 20-42 (except for chapters 35-36) in Knight, FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSICS. As usual, this will be a closed-book examination, administered under the provisions of the Vanderbilt Honor Code. Physical constants and key equations from the end-of-chapter summaries will be provided with the test. No aids other than a calculator, nor information stored on a calculator or elsewhere, can be used during the examination. You are encouraged to check your batteries before the examination, as no substitute calculators will be available.

A study guide will be available by Monday morning, April 25th, to assist you in preparing for the examination.
Structure of the Final Examination
The examination will have twenty multiple-choice questions, four blocks of five questions corresponding to each of the four sections of the course. Typical examples are listed on the study guide (see below). In each block of five questions, two will be quantitative, requiring a simple calculation drawing on the equation sheets to be provided, while three will be conceptual, and will require interpretation of a principle, concept or application.

PARTIAL CREDIT: While the test will be graded using Scantron sheets for efficiency, there will be room for showing your work. Wrong answers will be examined by the faculty and/or TAs for possible partial credit.
STUDY GUIDE FOR PHYSICS 117B FINAL EXAMINATION
The downloadable Adobe Acrobat file below contains the study guide for the final examinations. Each of the three examinations offered will contain no more than one problem from each theme (chapter) listed on the Study Guide. The problems chosen will all follow lines of calculation shown in the examples, or ask conceptual questions related to the subject matter of the examples or sections listed.

For example, there will be a single problem from Chapter 24 for each "sitting" of the examination drawn from the following examples:

X-ray diffraction (24.1), photons (24.2), de Broglie wavelength (24.4), quantization (24.3, 24.4)

That means if you want to prepare Chapter 24, you need to study only these four examples. If you have other questions about the content or format of the examination, please ask your instructor.
