Schumaker Elected to

Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters

Professor Larry Schumaker has been elected a foreign member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

Founded in 1857, the Academy is a non-governmental interdisciplinary body whose purpose is the advancement of science and scholarship in Norway. It provides a national forum of communication within and between various disciplines, and it represents Norwegian science to foreign academies and international organizations.

Prof. Schumaker has strong ties to the Norwegian mathematics community, due to the fact that his first Ph.D. student, Tom Lyche, is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oslo, and is himself a member of the Academy.

“Tom has had at least ten graduate students himself,” Schumaker notes, “and each of them has had several Ph.D. students. I think by now we are up to the fourth generation, so I have a lot of mathematical descendents in Norway. I continue to do research with my Norwegian colleagues, and we’ve co-organized a number of conferences in Norway over the years, the last in 2004 in Tromso.”

The Academy has 219 seats for Norwegian members and 183 seats reserved for foreign members. Members are elected by being nominated by a current member and then approved by a vote of the membership.
