Napster’s decision to terminate their nationwide Napster on Campus program effectively ends their 4-year partnership with Vanderbilt. However, Napster has agreed to continue discounted rates for current faculty and staff subscribers, and to offer a 33% 3-month discount on Napster to Go accounts for new Vanderbilt subscribers.

Vanderbilt’s association with Napster was part of a concerted effort to provide legal music downloading options, particularly to students. Vanderbilt retains partnerships with music download vendors Apple iTunes, MyTracks, and Ruckus, as well as Joost.

Effective immediately, Napster will no longer offer single-use student promotion codes or new faculty discount codes. Discounted rates for current Vanderbilt faculty and staff subscribers will remain in effect.

All Vanderbilt students and unsubscribed faculty and staff can receive a 3-month 33% discount on a Napster to Go subscription by entering the discount code below. The discounted rate is $30 for a 3-month term. When the term is up, unless cancelled beforehand, the price increases to $14.95 monthly. This offer expires December 31, 2008.

Students, faculty, and staff with inactive Napster accounts will remain in “Napster Light” status. This gives them access to their music libraries, allows them to play 30-second clips, and to purchase songs and albums from the Napster store. They can upgrade to a full-service subscription.

Vanderbilt’s partnership with Napster began in August, 2004. It exemplified Vanderbilt’s support for the Campus Action Network, an initiative dedicated to facilitating safe, legitimate digital music services to campuses. CAN was initiated by Sony BMG Music Entertainment and other record companies.

Napster to Go Discount Code

To get the Napster to Go discount, new subscribers can go to www.napster.com and click the link in the Cards and Codes section. Follow the instructions and enter promo code VANDERBILTNTG when prompted.

If you already have a Napster account, go to http://home.napster.com and sign in. Click My Account on the main menu and then click the link in the Cards and Codes area. Enter the promo code VANDERBILTNTG and click Submit. Confirm your account information and then click Submit again. Your discount begins immediately.
