Vanderbilt University is partnering with Mozy to offer simple, automatic, and secure online personal computer backup to students, faculty, staff, and departments at discounted prices.
“Our partnership with Mozy offers everyone in the Vanderbilt community a simple, secure, and cost-effective method to protect their important data,” said Rich Germano, Senior Director and Chief Operating Officer of Vanderbilt Information Technology Services (ITS). “Nearly everyone has experienced the frustration of losing an important file or files. With Mozy, if that happens, lost data can be quickly recovered.”
Mozy offers easy-to-use, secure, and confidential data backup via the Internet. Data is stored remotely, so if your computer crashes or is stolen you can easily retrieve it.
Files are encrypted on the computer first before being transferred directly to Mozy’s data center. You can choose to either create a private encryption key or use a Mozy encryption key. The private encryption key ensures that no one has access to the files except the person with that key. Mozy does not store the private key, ensuring the highest degree of privacy is maintained.
"Mozy's simple installation and set-it-and-forget-it operation provides our students protection against one of the leading causes of data loss—human error," said Jason Bradley, Director of Information Technology, Vanderbilt Law School. "Over the years we've seen numerous students suffer catastrophic data loss, sometimes the day before exams. Typically the most recent backup, if it exists at all, is weeks old. With Mozy their data is automatically backed up on a regular schedule."
Two pricing tiers are available, one for individual use and the other for departments. Vanderbilt students, faculty, and staff receive a 15% discount off MozyHome individual accounts. Vanderbilt departments receive 10% off MozyPro business accounts.

The MozyHome discount requires a 1 or 2-year subscription. Students, faculty, and staff will receive one month of service free with the one-year subscription or three months free with the two-year subscription. This means any member of the Vanderbilt community can back up unlimited personal files for less than $50 a year or less than $90 for two years.
MozyHome also includes a free version, where Vanderbilt community members can back up 2 gigabytes (GBs) or less of data absolutely free. No credit cards, fees, or expiration…just sign up. MozyPro, available to Vanderbilt departments, was designed for organizations and allows for central management, reporting, and billing. The discounted Vanderbilt cost is $3.56 per user license plus 45 cents per GB each month. MozyPro offers more features, including faster restores and around-the-clock phone support.
MozyHome is available for Windows and Mac. MozyPro is currently available only for Windows, but a Macintosh version is being developed. A fast, reliable Internet connection is required.
