ITS Gives, Receives Revolutionary XO "One Laptop Per Child" Computer   printer

Vanderbilt Information Technology Services (ITS) donated a revolutionary laptop computer to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program. The program strives to provide connected OLPC laptops to children in developing countries.

Because ITS purchased the computer during the OLPC Give One Get One program in December, the department will receive a similar computer which will be displayed so others can learn about the technology.

The program uses revolutionary XO computers. The low-cost computer is extremely energy efficient and can operate from several energy sources, including solar, hand crank and pedal power. It has wireless broadband that operates in a mesh network, allowing each laptop to talk to its nearest neighbor. The computer also features a dual mode display, full color or black and white.

The OLPC program is aimed at the nearly two billion children in the developing world who are inadequately educated or receive no education at all.
