ITS Web Application Contest Winners Announced   printer

Aaron Thompson’s web application allowing students to rate Munchie Mart foods was the winner of the $1000 grand prize in the Vanderbilt Information Technology (ITS) Web 2.0 Application contest.

“We’d like to thank everyone who participated in the contest,” Nanto said. “We feel like it was a great success and we look forward to doing something like this again in the future.”

ITS launched the Web 2.0 Contest with the goals of encouraging students to learn new technologies and contribute to the overall Vanderbilt Community experience. The term “web 2.0” refers to a new generation of websites. Web 2.0 sites treat the web as a platform, harness collective intelligence, and create data in a clean, rich, environment.

A panel of judges reviewed entries with three criteria in mind: potential contribution to the Vanderbilt Community, creativity, and use of Web 2.0 technologies and /or Application Program Interfaces or APIs.

As each of the entries is in the development phase, how or if they will be implemented here is yet to be determined.

Matt Huckabee won the $500 second prize for his application integrating the Vanderbilt campus with Google maps. Zheng Fu took third place, winning an Apple iPod for his application of interest to Vanderbilt students from China.

“My friends laughed a little bit at first,” said Thompson of this application. “But then they thought it was pretty great.”
