You can minimize your computer’s exposure to security threats by following some guidelines set forth by Vanderbilt University’s Network Security Manager Sal Ortega.

Ortega outlined 10 focus areas for computer security in his presentation Security Awareness for Vanderbilt University Local Support Providers . Although the presentation is aimed at computer support personnel, the information will be useful to all computer users.

Focus areas include operating system and software application patch management, installing anti-virus and anti-spyware software, and password management. Web browser and email client security, encryption, file sharing programs, and physical security are also covered.
