ITS Data Center Offers SNMP Monitoring of Co-Located Servers   printer

This graph shows data generated from SNMP monitoring.

Vanderbilt Information Technology Services (ITS) is now offering SNMP monitoring of co-located servers.

Co-located servers are customer-owned servers housed in the ITS Data Center. ITS provides basic monitoring, network connectivity, cooling, and a secure location for co-located machines.

Effective immediately, ITS can provide service monitoring using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Monitoring and metering data is taken every 5 minutes from each monitored machine (server) continuously (24-7). There is no charge for the service.

If you have co-located equipment in the ITS Data Center and want to take advantage of SNMP monitoring, fill out the online ITS Network Operations Center Service Monitoring Request form at
https://sitemason.vanderbilt.edu/form/gnKEy4

Monitoring usually begins within a day or two after a request is approved.

As part of the service, alarms can be set to activate when pre-determined thresholds are exceeded. ITS Network Operations Center (NOC) personnel will then notify a specified contact person or follow a specified escalation path for the affected machine.

For example, the owner of a co-located server may request notification when 80% of available disk space is used. An alarm can be set to activate when that threshold is met.

Server owners can discuss contact methods and escalation paths with their ITS Service Delivery Manager (see
http://its.vanderbilt.edu/support/servicedelivery.php).

SNMP can also meter, or track, several server parameters, including CPU utilization and memory usage. Graphs are generated from metered data but no alarms are triggered.

The ITS data center began offering SNMP monitoring in July, according to NOC Manager Scott Milliken.
