Neuroscience 292 Undergraduate Research Guidelines
The purpose of the Undergraduate Research Course is to provide the student with an introduction to the intellectual and technical aspects of research in neuroscience. The student works in the laboratory of a member of the neuroscience faculty at Vanderbilt and, through both reading and hands-on laboratory experience, will learn how the research scientist identifies and attempts to solve important problems in understanding how the nervous system works.

The general procedures for registering for the course and the expectations of the student are outlined below.

This course is intended for Juniors and Seniors. Exceptional students may be admitted as sophomores as long as they have had NSC/PSY 201. In order to register for NSC 292, a student must obtain an appropriate faculty sponsor and under his/her guidance develop a plan of study for the semester. The plan need not be exceptionally detailed, but should identify the primary goals that the sponsor and student hope to achieve during the semester.

To find a faculty sponsor, look first at the research opportunities available on the NSC web page at the following address:

Faculty and Research

You will find a short research description of the faculty involved in the neuroscience program. It is left to your initiative to determine what area of research you wish to pursue. Email or call the scientist whose research description you like and ask whether you could visit and work in her/his lab. We suggest that you contact MORE than one lab. Some researchers will tell you that they already have several students and cannot take any more.  After you have found a mentor, retrieve the NSC 292 contract (291-292contract.pdf), fill it out together with your faculty sponsor, have him/her sign it, and bring it to the Director of Honors and Independent Study (DHIS) for signature. Once the DHIS has signed it, he/she will contact Carol Wiley who will register you for NSC 292. A confirmation email will be sent to both the student and faculty sponsor for clarification of registration.

Students that are considering taking NSC 292 are urged to make contact with potential faculty sponsors early in the pre-registration period for the semester they plan to enroll. If after following all these guidelines you still have questions, contact the DHIS.

Registration for continuation
If a student would like to continue NSC 292 in the following semester with the same sponsor and project title, a new contract is not required. However, in order to be registered for the course again, the student MUST have his/her faculty sponsor send an email to Carol Wiley stating the student's name and their approval for continuation of NSC 292. Ms. Wiley will then send an email to the student and faculty sponsor to confirm registration.

Course structure
Once a student has been admitted to NSC 292, his or her primary interactions during the semester will be with the faculty sponsor and members of the sponsor's laboratory.  At the end of the semester, students who are continuing their research (and have pre-registered for NSC 292 for the next semester) will write a maximum two-page abstract describing what they have done and what they will do in the next semester.  This abstract will be graded by their supervisor, and will be part of the student's final grade.  A copy of this abstract must be given to the DHIS by the last day of class.

Students who are not pre-registered for NSC 292 the next semester are required to write a final paper of approximately 10-15 pages in length summarizing their research. The paper is required whether or not the student  plans to continue the research at some later date.

The paper should include an Introduction/Background section, Methods, Results, and Discussion that summarizes the research that was carried out during the NSC 292 research experience.  The document should be double spaced with 1-inch margins, and 12 pt Times or equivalently clear font.  The expectation is that the student will have read previous papers on the topic of their research and understand the reasoning that led to their research effort.  They should also express an understanding of the hypotheses and methods on which their lab efforts were based.  If the results warrant statistical treatment the analytic methods should be included or referenced.  The discussion should be focused narrowly on the results and their interpretation.  Please contact the DHIS if you have questions about the organization and style of the paper.  The paper is to be graded by the faculty sponsor and a copy must be given to the DHIS by the last day of class.  There will be a deduction of 1 letter grade for papers received after the deadline.

Grades
The final grade for the course will be assigned by the faculty sponsor with concurrence of the Director of Honors and Independent Study. The grade will be based on the abstract and/or final paper of accomplishment along with a strong emphasis on the evaluation of the student's performance in the laboratory of the faculty sponsor.

Summer Registration
Students are allowed to register for 1 or 2 sections of NSC 292 Summer Research.  Each section runs both summer sessions (10 weeks), but the two sections can be taken concurrently for a total of four hours credit.  You will be required to pay tuition for Summer research, just as you do during the academic year.
