SUMMARY:Expert on sustainable development to speak Nov. 13
DESCRIPTION:Moses Musaazi of Makerere University in Uganda develops affordable\, eco-friendly\, sustainable solutions to every day problems in the developing world. Musaazi will give a public lecture on “Appropriate Technology and Human Development” from 1\:30-2\:45 p.m. in Mayborn 204 on Nov. 13. This event is free and open to the public and will discuss the variety of ways that appropriate technology impacts global change and sustainable development\, particularly in the context of education in Uganda.\nMusaazi is an electrical engineer and the director of the Appropriate Technology Centre at Makerere\, director of the Electrical Engineering Department\, Team Leader of the Presidential Initiative to Support Appropriate Technologies (PISAT) and Founder and Director of Technology 4 Tomorrow Limited (www.t4africa.com [http\://www.t4africa.com]) at Makerere University in Kampala\, Uganda.\nSome of the technology Musaazi has been instrumental in developing include\:\no    affordable sanitary pads for Ugandan schoolgirls\: MakaPads. Made from papyrus and minimal donated office waste paper\, these sanitary pads are affordable (about &frac12\; the cost of the pads currently on the market)\, functional\, and have the added benefit of job creation.\no    low cost interlocking soil bricks (made of local materials including clay) for building durable\, low-cost housing\,  and\no    portable incinerators and smokeless incinerators used at hospitals throughout Uganda.\nThere will also be a reception\, conversation and Q&A at the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center for International Education Week from 11\:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.\: brown bag lunch.\nContact Alice M.
