SUMMARY:Open mike event 'That Takes Ovaries' on March 20
DESCRIPTION:Vanderbilt will host a That Takes Ovaries event on March 20\, at 6\:30 p.m.\, at the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center auditorium. The event is free and open to the public\, although donations will be collected for Girls Inc.\nThat Takes Ovaries started as a book of 64 short\, real-life stories from women and girls\, and the bold\, gutsy\, brazen\, outrageous\, courageous things they have done. The book was developed into a play\, and then into a series of open mike events that all focus on real-life stories from local women and girls (and guys\, too) having fun and inspiring each other as they share their own stories and triumphs.\nOvaries mixes art with activism and fun in an international grassroots movement for empowerment. Since 2002\, hundreds of That Takes Ovaries open mikes have been held around the globe\, either led by Rivka Solomon\, Bobbi Ausubel (co-playwrights of the play) or Mira Kakkar (India coordinator) -- or organized and led by local women in the community. Everyone who shares gets a chocolate egg wrapped in gold foil -- a Golden Ovary award.\nOvaries will feature some student and faculty participants in the reading of stories and invite the campus to join in for the open-mike segment to share their own courageous stories.  We will also invite local campus and community courageous women to attend in recognition of Women’s History Month.\nFor more info about That Take Ovaries\: www.thattakesovaries.org/ [http\://www.thattakesovaries.org/ ]\nGirls Incorporated is a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong\, smart\, and bold. With roots dating to 1864\, Girls Inc has provided vital educational programs to millions of American girls\, particularly those in high-risk\, underserved areas. Today\, innovative programs help girls confront subtle societal messages about their value and potential\, and prepare them to lead successful\, independent\, and fulfilling lives.
