The complete list of faculty awards noted at the Fall Faculty Assembly Aug. 26 at the Student Life Center:
SUTHERLAND PRIZE: Dr. John Alexander Oates, Thomas A. Frist Sr. Professor of Medicine; Professor of Pharmacology, School of Medicine
The Earl Sutherland Prize for Achievement in Research is awarded annually to a member of the Vanderbilt faculty whose achievements in research, scholarship or creative expression have had significant critical reception and are recognized nationally or internationally. The prize consists of $5,000 and an engraved pewter julep cup. The winner's name is added to a silver bowl following a design by Paul Revere. The recipient keeps the bowl for one year.
THOMAS JEFFERSON AWARD: Virginia M. Scott, Professor of French, College of Arts & Science
The Thomas Jefferson Award is made annually "for distinguished service to Vanderbilt through extraordinary contributions as a member of the faculty in the councils and government of the University." The award carries with it an engraved pewter goblet and $2,500 cash. Faculty in all schools are eligible.
CHANCELLOR’S AWARDS FOR RESEARCH
Tony Earley, Samuel Milton Fleming Professor of English, College of Arts and Science, for his novel, The Blue Star, published in 2008 by Little, Brown and Company
Judy Garber, professor of Psychology and Human Development, Department of Psychology and Human Development, Peabody College, for her article, "Prevention of Depression in At-Risk Adolescents: A Randomized Controlled Trial" appearing in the June 3, 2009, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Todd Graham, professor of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Science, for two papers: "Reconstitution of phospholipid translocase activity with purified Drs2p, a type-IV P-type ATPase from budding yeast" in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2009, and "Regulation of a Golgi Flippase by Phosphoinositudes and an ArfGEF" (Nature Cell Biology, 2009).
Björn Knollman associate professor of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, for his paper in Nature Medicine (2009) entitled, "Flecanide prevents catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia in mice and humans." Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia is a cardiac arrhythmia that can lead to sudden death.
Charles Sanders, professor of Biochemistry, School of Medicine, for his paper, published in Science in 2009, "Solution nuclear magnetic resonance structure of membrane-integral diacylglycerol kinase."
The Chancellor's Awards for Research recognize excellence in research, scholarship or creative expression. All tenured and tenure-track members of the Vanderbilt faculty are eligible for consideration. The awards are given for works presented or published in the preceding three calendar years. Up to five awards may be given each year. Works by research teams are eligible for consideration. The award carries a stipend of $1,000 and an engraved pewter julep cup.
