The decision came down to Yale or Vanderbilt for New York Times blogger Michael Greshko. Citing Vanderbilt’s financial aid and a liking for Nashville, he chose Vanderbilt.
Greshko is one of four high school seniors that The New York Times education blog “The Choice” has been following as they receive acceptances, rejections or wait listings.
“I’m now officially a Vanderbilt Commodore, and it couldn’t feel more right,” Greshko wrote in the blog April 30. “Vandy has everything I’m looking for, and in thinking about the incredible opportunities the school will give me, I feel excited and even a little giddy.”
Originally, Greshko was leaning the other way. Then he visited Vanderbilt over Easter weekend after being offered the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship.
His experience in Nashville was so powerful, he visited Yale again. And despite his declaration of “I can’t stand country music,” Greshko decided Vanderbilt was the better fit.
“The more I spent Sunday weighing what both schools offered, the more I began to realize that, despite initial appearances, Yale and Vanderbilt were far more similar than they were different,” writes Greshko. “Vanderbilt, in fact, came out on top in ways I hadn’t originally anticipated - its freshman living experience and hometown both better fits with me than Yale’s.”
