Scott Miller, United Way at Work, said that while 2009 was a tough year for everyone, “Because of you, 1,200 kids will be successful in their education through our Read to Succeed program,” Miller said. “Because of you, we are offering free tax preparation to those who need it most. Last year, that free tax help resulted in more than $11.4 million in refunds.” More than 50,000 people will be helped because of the donations from Vanderbilt employees, he said.
David and Gail Williams, co-chairs of the 2009 Community Giving Campaign, accepted the award on behalf of Vanderbilt.
“I am really proud of Vanderbilt,” said David, vice chancellor for University Affairs and Athletics. “Gail and I accept this award on behalf of the people the United Way is helping and the lives it is changing.”
“You really gave from your hearts and pockets this year,” said Gail, associate director of community engagement. “Y’all rock!”
