Haiti update for March 2010
Since launching the Dores for Haiti Disaster Relief Campaign last month, our community has responded with a generosity of spirit and a willingness to serve.

What we have done so far:

$4, 034.: Proceeds from lecture featuring Blake Mycoskie, founder of TOMS shoes. Proceeds benefit Partners in Health.

$800: Donated to the Children of Nations International for Dominican and Haitian relief efforts by VU student organization Recue and Aid for the Dominican Republic

$1,500: Donated at the VU Community Chorus performance on Feb. 21. Donations support GHESKIO in Port-au-Prince.

$5,005: Raised during Hope for Haiti Education Benefit Feb. 16.

30 people participated in on-campus Red Cross shelter training session Feb. 6

$400: Raised from the Vanderbilt Center for Integrative Health yoga & meditation fundraisers Feb. 3 & 6

$433: Raised during VUTs ReACT performances by Vanderbilt’s Original Cast and Vanderbilt Off Broadway on Feb. 3 & 4.

398: Pints of blood donated to the Red Cross during Blood Drive Feb. 2 & 3

$2,500: Annual Mannafit dinner on Jan. 26 donations of 25 percent of all ticket sales to benefit Partners in Health.

3,000: Pairs of shoes collected for Soles 4 Souls at Jan. 23 & 24 VU basketball games

What we are doing:

The Vanderbilt Carribbean Students Association will be on the wall every Thursday until March 18 collecting monetary donations for relief in Haiti through Theo’s Work, Inc.

Nashville-based Soles4Souls is collecting shoes and monetary donations. The Department of French and Italian is collecting shoes on campus. Shoes can be dropped off at 215 Furman.

The African-American and Diaspora Studies Department is sponsoring an Inaugural Undergraduate Essay Contest: Rethinking Haiti.

We hope to have another dinner and fundraiser event the week of March 22-26. We will post more information as it becomes available.

Rites of Spring, April 22-24

The first night of Rites will be a concert by student bands. The $5 admission fee will be donated to Haitian Relief.  We will also donate $5 of the ticket price for Friday night and $5 of the ticket price for Saturday night to Haitian relief.
