Oct. 29 lecture on Israel and the Palestinian Middle Class
10/28/2009
10:05 am
The "Muslims and Jews" lecture series sponsored by the Program in Jewish Studies continues at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, when Bernard Avishai, author of The Hebrew Republic, speaks in 123 Buttrick Hall on "Israel and the Palestinian Middle Class.”
Based on his article “The Economics of Occupation” in the current Harper’s, Avishai will discuss the question of “economic peace,” which the Israeli government says it favors. Can Palestine come into being without a civil society anchored by a rising class of entrepreneurs and professionals? Is Israel really doing what it can to allow Palestinians to build sustainable businesses—and if not, why not?
The lecture is free and open to the public.
