The United States Supreme Court issued an opinion on June 25 in the case Horne v. Flores that dramatically addresses inequality in education financing. The Court has prominently cited a research publication by Matthew Springer, assistant professor of leadership, policy and organization and director of the National Center on Performance Incentives, and James Guthrie, Patricia & Rodes Hart Professor of Education Leadership& Policy and director of the Peabody Center for Education Policy,  in a far reaching education finance opinion.

The article by Springer and Guthrie explains tactics by which plaintiffs in such cases inappropriately seek legal redress in order to circumvent conventional political processes.

Guthrie was part of a team of university based public finance scholars that submitted an amicus brief in the case in support of the court majority's opinion.
