Nicola Bellomo

A leading researcher on applying mathematics to biology and medicine spoke about how math can be a tool in fighting the progression of tumor cells during the annual Shanks Lecture, held this year at Vanderbilt.

Nicola Bellomo, president of the Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics and co-editor in chief of the Journal Mathematical Models and Methods in Applied Sciences, spoke May 19 at the Stevenson Center during the Mathematical Modeling in the Medical Sciences conference.

Bellomo’s research into mathematical modeling of complex systems constituted by many individuals interacting in a non-linear manner has sparked interest from researchers in biology, economics, the social sciences and medicine.

The Shanks Lecture, sponsored by the Shanks Endowment, was part of a four-day conference at Vanderbilt that included speakers on models of cancer growth, epidemics and infection, physiologic systems and medical imaging.

The conference was sponsored by the Shanks Endowment, the National Science Foundation and Vanderbilt University.
