Vanderbilt Center for Integrative Health to offer 'Practicing Mindfulness: The Master Skill for Happiness' workshop beginning Sept. 9

Posted 8/26/2008

Mindfulness is a way of relating directly to whatever is happening in your life, meeting your experience skillfully and with an open heart. Mindfulness training is an antidote to the habitual response patterns that lock us into routines that undermine emotional and physical health.

Participants in the program begin to develop the capacity to be present, awake and aware of the preciousness of life as it unfolds moment to moment. Whether they come to class to manage physical challenges, to support medical treatments and enhance opportunities for healing, to deal with difficulties in work or relationships, or to enhance capacities for happiness, mindfulness is the master skill we teach.

When:  The workshop consists of six 1.5-hour instruction/discussion/guided practice class sessions on Tuesdays, from 5:30-7 p.m., starting Sept. 9 and running through Oct. 14.

Location: 3401 West End Ave., Suite 380W, just a few blocks from the Vanderbilt campus.  You can view a map and directions at www.VCIH.org.

Instructors: Gordon Peerman, D.Min. and Kathy Woods, M.Ed.

Fee:  Call to prepay the $300 fee.  This is payable by cash, check or major credit card.  If you are a Vanderbilt employee, you can use payroll deduction.

Attendance at the first session (Sept. 9) is mandatory as it serves as the orientation session for the entire workshop.

Space for each class is limited to 15 persons. To reserve your spot, please e-mail leslie.j.johnston@vanderbilt.edu or call 615-343-1913.

The Center for Integrative Health focuses on healing the whole person by combining traditional
