Dr. Jeff Balser will serve as interim dean of the Vanderbilt School of Medicine starting mid-May while a nationwide search is conducted to permanently fill the position.

Balser will fill the role after the departure of Dr. Steve Gabbe, who is leaving for a position as senior vice president for health sciences and chief executive officer at Ohio State University Medical Center.

The search committee will be chaired by Dr. R. Daniel Beauchamp, chair of the department of surgical sciences.  Suggestions and recommendations may be directed to him. 

Also serving on the search committee are: A. J. Baucom, postdoctoral fellow and president of the Vanderbilt Medical School PostDoc Association; Julie R. Field, graduate student and representative to the Vanderbilt Medical Alumni Association; Jonathan D. Gitlin, chair, pediatrics; Larry M. Goldberg, CEO of Vanderbilt Hospital; John C. Gore, Chancellor’s University Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences; Stephan H.W. Heckers, chair, department of psychiatry; Sara M. Horvitz, medical student; Orrin H. Ingram, chair, Medical Center Board; Richard C. McCarty, dean, College of Arts and Science; Linda D. Norman, senior associate dean, School of Nursing; Michael R. Waterman, chair, department of biochemistry; and Susan R. Wente, chair, department of cell & developmental biology.
