Provost search committee asks for your nominations
Mark Wait
Dear Vanderbilt Colleagues:

As you know, Chancellor Zeppos has initiated a search for Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of Vanderbilt University. Given the University’s broad and ambitious agenda, our impressive progress in recent years, and the need to move the University forward expeditiously, the search will focus almost exclusively on internal candidates. Chancellor Zeppos and the Search Committee have established the goal that a new Provost be identified by Commencement or very soon thereafter.

On behalf of the Search Committee, I invite you to nominate persons who meet the criteria given below in Chancellor Zeppos’ charge to the Committee. We especially seek individuals who have a perceptive and comprehensive view of the University’s strengths and opportunities, and who embrace the rich diversity that has contributed so much to Vanderbilt’s progress and greatness. Specifically, we seek the following qualities:

-A respected academic leader who values and has devoted a career to teaching, discovery, and research;
-A respected university citizen, able to recognize the unique transinstitutional strategy we have adopted and able to seek new opportunities to build around our strengths;
-A keen and strong appreciation for our deep commitment to the undergraduate experience;
-A respected academic who can lead a review of our progress and identify necessary investments in our graduate program;
-A strong appreciation for our outstanding Medical Center and the ability to build unique programs in all disciplines partnering with the Medical Center;
-A balanced and deep commitment to the core mission of Vanderbilt and a record of support for the broad ranges of disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, physical and biological sciences, and professional disciplines that constitute Vanderbilt, yet make it greater than the sum of its parts;
-A person who understands the importance of philanthropy and how vital it is to support and sustain our academic mission.

Please send your nominations to Mark.Wait@Vanderbilt.edu by 5 p.m. next Wednesday, April 9.  Be assured that these nominations will be treated confidentially by the Search Committee.

Thank you for your assistance in this very important process.

Sincerely,

Mark Wait, Dean
Blair School of Music
