Two speakers will lead a discussion on science, philosophy and the environment at this year’s Berry Lecture.

Vanderbilt professor Jonathan Gilligan and J. Aaron Simmons of Hendrix College will speak beginning at 6 p.m. Monday, March, 24, in Room 103 Wilson Hall on the Vanderbilt campus.
The event, “Science, Philosophy and the Environment: A Conversation Across Disciplines,” is free and open to the public.

Gilligan, senior lecturer in earth and environmental sciences, will speak on “Ethics in Geological Time: Should We Care About Distant Future Generations?”

Simmons, a Vanderbilt alumnus and visiting assistant professor of philosophy at Hendrix, will lecture on “Is Caring for People the Key to Caring for the Environment?”

A reception will precede the event at 5 p.m.

The Berry Lecture series began in 1988 funded by John and Shirley Lachs with Alan Berry and Kendall Berry to show how philosophy can impact our lives.

For those unable to attend, audio of the event will be recorded and posted on VUCast, the Web site of Vanderbilt News Service, at www.vanderbilt.edu/news/.
