Mission San Luis Historic & Archaeological Site
Mission San Luis was the former western capital of Spanish Florida and was established by Apalachee Indians in what is today Tallahassee, Florida. Historians and archaeologists have worked together for several decades to research this site and Executive Director Dr. Bonnie McEwan was recently honored at the White House for "painstaking effort...to ensure the highest level of historical accuracy" in the reconstruction of the site. I have consulted on this site for over a decade and have enjoyed seeing the plans materialized in beautiful reconstructions of an Apalachee Council House,a Franciscan church, a fort, and other structures as well as an impressive museum exhibit.

Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose was a town established in 1738 by escaped slaves who fled from Carolina and became free in Spanish Florida. My research on this town was the basis for a major traveling exhibit and catalog, a video, and teaching materials produced by the Florida Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida.

Mose is now a National Historic Landmark and the State of Florida is developing a new museum at the site, which is two miles north of the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida.

WUFT, at the University of Florida, produced this documentary which won the Suncoast Regional Emmy. I provided much of the research based on Spanish sources and continue to research and publish on Black Seminoles.
