Balme & Morwood, Oxford Latin Course: Part III (2nd ed.:1996). Objectives: Consolidation of morphology and examination of the more complex syntax of the Latin language. At a rate of about 2 lessons per chapter, the aim is to cover the end of Part 2 (chapters 27-33 of the yellow book) by the middle of February, and all of Part 3 (blue book) by the end of the semester. The course has been designed for those with basic experience, i.e., Lat 101 at Vanderbilt or a rusty year or two of high school. Familiarity is assumed with 1) the declensional endings of nouns, adjectives (including comparative and superlative degrees), demonstrative and personal pronouns; 2) conjugational stems and endings of the Indicative Present, Imperfect, Perfect, and Pluperfect, as well as the Present Imperative and Participle, of all regular and irregular verbs. Lesson format: Each lesson will begin after you have all handed in the homework assigned the previous lesson; you may write it out by hand if you wish, but illegible submissions will be graded as incorrect. We will usually begin with some drills on the grammatical material from the previous lesson (unless it is time for the Friday quiz), and we will then move on to the new grammar to be covered. A Latin reading will often be followed by some Q & A (often in Latin) on the plot. Exams: -Eight short (10 min.) quizzes on the grammar and vocabulary of two units, at the beginning of class most Fridays. -Three less short (50 min.) review exams. -The Grand Final (2 hours) is scheduled for Wed., May 4, 9 a.m. (an alternative final will be offered on Fri., Apr. 29, Noon) Course grade: Participation and homework: 10 % Weekly quizzes (2.5% each): 20% Review exams (15% each) 45 % Final: 25 % Grading scale: Points are scored out of a total of 100: the top ten constitute the “A” range, the next ten the “B” range, and so forth. The letter is accompanied by “+” or “-” if your score falls within the top or bottom 3 points of each range. Thus, e.g., 87-89 = B+; 83-86 = B; 80-82 = B- .
