Vote in Special Election Jan. 22 about English-only issue and changes to Metro Charter

On Thursday, Jan. 22, Davidson County will have a special referendum election on two proposed charter amendments: one regarding the official language of government and one about the process for making changes to the Metro Charter.

Polling places will be open fro 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. If you are unsure of where to vote, you can visit this Web site to find out where your polling place is located. If you have moved, you should go to the polling place in the precinct where you live, not where your previous home was. You can call the commission at 615-862-8800 to verify your registration and find the new location.Another option if you have moved is to vote at the Election Commission office at 800 Second Ave. S.

The proposed amendments to the Charter of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County are summarized as follows:

This amendment provides that:
• English is the official language of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, Tennessee.
• Official actions which bind or commit the government are required to be taken only in the English language.
• All official government communications and publications are required to be made only in English.
• No person shall have a right to government services in any other language.
• All meetings of the Metro Council, Boards, and Commissions of the Metropolitan Government are required to be conducted only in English.
• The Metro Council may make specific exceptions to protect public health and safety.
• Nothing in the amendment shall be interpreted to conflict with federal or state law.
