Policies for Class Visitors

Individuals from the Vanderbilt community may, with permission of the instructors, attend selected Monday Lectures.  The following principles and policies apply.

TO CLASS VISITORS

While attending a lecture it is essential to bear in mind that the course is designed for those students enrolled in it.  The question-and-answer period following each lecture is aimed at providing an opportunity for the students to interact with the invited speaker.  With 60 students this means that time might be limited.  If circumstances permit, we will open the floor to questions involving all attending.  Nonetheless, insofar as this opening of the floor stimulates new lines of questioning and discussion from students, we expect visitors to defer to the students.  It will not be acceptable for visitors to engage in discussion/debate with the invited speaker, or other class visitors, in a manner that excludes the students.  On the other hand, we welcome contributions that enhance the pedagogical quality of these question-and-answer periods.

TO STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THE COURSE

As outlined above the question-and-answer period following each lecture is aimed at providing an opportunity for you to interact with the invited speaker (see Rules of Engagement).  Be aware, nonetheless, that visitors, likely to include Vanderbilt faculty, can be valuable resources and offer important perspectives.
