College Writing Program
Morgan Award
Each year the College Writing Program conducts the competition for the Henrietta Morgan Memorial Award for first-year writers. Established by William Morgan in memory of his wife, the award is presented each year at Commencement to the first-year student who submits the best sample of original writing.  Students in their first year can submit up to two pieces of writing of any kind: submissions need not have been written for class; they need only have been written by current first-year students during their first year at Vanderbilt. Poetry, fiction, expository prose, analytic or interpretive essays -- all submissions are welcome.
Submissions are accepted throughout the school year. The deadline each year is the end of the first week in April.   Faculty: encourage your students to apply! Students: you need not be nominated to apply! Put yourself in the running for a prize!
Three prizes to be used for the purchase of books will be awarded:  a first prize of $150.00, a second prize of $100.00, and a third prize of $75.00. The first-place winner's name will be printed in the Commencement Program. The entries will be judged by a committee appointed by the Director of the College Writing Program.
For entry forms, you may contact the Writing Program secretary, Dori Mikus (2-6527), during the academic year, or print out the form using this link.   Forms are also available in Benson 420.  The deadline is Thursday, April 7, 2005.
