College of Arts and Science Microcomputer Labs
General Lab Information

The College of Arts and Sciences established the Microcomputer Laboratories in 1984 to support instruction in the College and the University. At present you may choose among two walk-in computer laboratories and three computer classrooms housing a total of 147 systems. The facilities are conveniently located on the main campus as follows:

  • Garland Hall Lab
31 seat classroom and 24 seat walk-in lab with Windows systems, each having DVD and 250Mb Zip Drives. Scanners, color printing, and CD-RW/DVD-RW drives are available upon request in the Special Projects room.
  • Stevenson Center Computer Classroom
30 Windows Pentium 4 Systems with CD-RW/DVD and 250Mb Zip drives.  One color scanner is available.
  • Wilson Hall Computer Classroom
30 iMac systems with Combo DVD-RW/CD-RW and 250Mb Zip drives. In addition there are 2 Mac G4 systems that are connected to a scanner and oversized color printer.

All but one of the Microcomputer Lab facilities are open 90 or more hours per week with the Garland and Wilson Labs and Computer Classrooms open seven days a week during the Fall and Spring Semesters. The Garland computer lab is available for walk-in users at all times that it is open. Because a number of classes are regularly scheduled in the Stevenson and Wilson computer classrooms, walk-in times vary during the day but these rooms are generally available during the late afternoon and early evening hours. The Wilson Computer Classroom is also available during the late evening and weekend hours.

The A & S Microcomputer Labs offer one of the widest selections of "courseware" and commercial productivity software in the country. Due to software licensing restrictions, even students with computers in their rooms will need to use the labs in order to use the special software packages that are required by some courses.

Below is a sampling of the software that is available in the computer labs and classroom:

Use of the labs is free for students, faculty, and staff, but printing is charged. All of our labs are staffed with student consultants who can assist you in using the systems and software.

Please Note: In addition to the A&S computing facilities, "computer kiosks" with 24 hour access, are located in each of the residence halls, Rand Hall, the Sarratt Student Center, and The Science and Engineering Library. As a result, access to computers in the College is quite reliable.
