Professor Wally LeStourgeon has been named Professor of Biological Sciences, emeritus.

Biological Sciences undergraduates Shayam Murali and Claire Cato have been named Beckman Scholars to support their research endeavors during the next two summers and intervening academic year. Shayam will be working in the Friedman lab, and Claire will be working in the Eichman lab.
Summer is a time for research at least for many Biological Sciences undergraduates. Michael Pritchett (Eichman lab), Ryan Khodadadi (Janetopoulos lab), Holly Elmore (Rokas Lab), Una Nattermann (Stubbs Lab), Sam Friedman (Broadie lab), and Boting Ning (Kaplan Lab) are each recipients of a VUSRP award to carry out research this summer. Ann Ding is one of four Littlejohn Summer Research Scholars within the VUSRP program, and Ann will be working in the Friedman lab. Aneesh Tyle received an A&S Honor Scholarship Summer Research Award to carry out research in the Gamse lab. Sushma Boppana will be an NSF REU fellow this summer in the Hillyer lab.
Congratulations to Rob Brucker, Wenyue Du, and Abi Olena for completing the Teaching Certificate Program and receiving their Teaching Certificate from the Graduate School and the Center for Teaching. Program participants attend workshops, meet with CFT teaching observer-consultants, explore the teaching literature in reading groups, and engage in scholarly teaching projects.
Natalie Christian, an undergraduate major in Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology, is the recipient of a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

Emma Steigerwald, a undergraduate major in Molecular and Cellular Biology, has been named a Truman Scholar, an honor given to only 54 students nationwide.

Professor Julian Hillyer is the recipient of the 2012 Recognition Award in Insect Physiology, Biochemistry and Toxicology from the Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America
